- Le nom du marquis de Cuevas est indissociable des ballets de Monte-Carlo qu'il a ressuscités dans les années 40 en leur insufflant tout à la fois la force de sa passion et l'immense fortune de son épouse, née Rockefeller.Fastueux, follement mondain, George de las Cuevas de Bustillo y Teran, né le 26 mai 1885 à Santiago du Chili, s'intègre parfaitement à cette époque de l'immédiat après-guerre aussi pressée de panser ses plaies que de rattraper le temps perdu. Le monde de la fête se joue à lui-même le spectacle de ses extravagances. On s'y affronte en des joutes d'un autre âge. Au grand bal Besteguy donné en 1951 à Venise répond le grand bal Chiberta du marquis qui rassemble trois mille invités. Une querelle qui l'oppose à Serge Lifar se règle par un duel resté célèbre.En France, à Monaco, aux Etats-Unis, Gérard Mannoni a recueilli les témoignages d'Elisabeth de Cuevas, fille du marquis, de Rosella Hightower, de tous ceux qui ont été les derniers témoins de cette hallucinante saga. Il signe une biographie féerique de cet aristocrate fantasque qui recevait le Tout-Paris des années 50 dans l'ancien appartement de Cécile Sorel, couché sur son lit, entouré de ses pékinois et de ses perroquets. Critique musical, producteur sur France Culture, auteur d'une douzaine de livres consacrés à la danse, Gérard Mannoni remet en lumière le nom mythique d'un fastueux mécène.
