- *Görme engelli bireyler için Braille alfabesiyle özel olarak hazırlanmıştır. ANTON ÇEHOV, 1860’ta doğdu. 1879’da Moskova Tıp Fakültesi’ne girdi. 1884’te çeşitli hastanelerde görev almaya başladı ve Bukalemun adlı ilk öykü kitabı aynı yıl yayımlandı. Bu dönemde birer perdelik kısa oyunlar da yazdı ve İvanov (1887) adlı oyunuyla dram tekniği alanında Rus tiyatrosuna büyük yenilikler getirdi. Bozkır (1888) adlı uzun öyküsüyle büyük bir yazar olarak tanındı ve öykünün Rusya’da yazınsal bir tür olarak yerleşmesini sağladı. Vereme yakalanınca, 1891’de Moskova yakınlarındaki Melikovo Çiftliği’ni satın aldı ve burada geçirdiği yıllar gerek yazınsal üretimi, gerek kolera salgını ve kıtlıklardaki tıbbi etkinlikleri açısından son derece verimli oldu. 1899’da Yalta’da yaptırdığı ev, Korolenko, Rahmaninov, Stanislavski gibi sanatçıların uğrak yeri oldu. Hastalığına rağmen, Duçetka (1899), Köpekli Kadın ve Gelin (1899) gibi ünlü yapıtlarını bu dönemde kaleme aldı. Vanya Dayı (1897), Üç Kız Kardeş (1900), Vişne Bahçesi (1903) gibi büyük oyunlarını hayatının son yıllarında yarattı. 1904’te, eşi ve ünlü tiyatro oyuncusu Olga Knipper’le gittiği Badanweiler’de ölen Çehov, çarlık dönemindeki siyasi çıkmazları, basit insan yaşantılarını büyüteç altına almaktaki ustalığı, yalın ve ölçülü biçemi, gelenekselliği aşan anlatım biçimiyle dünya edebiyatının ustaları arasına katıldı.
