Tehlikeli İlişkiler'in entrikalarla dolu öyküsü iki karakterinin, Markiz ile Vikont'un kutsal olmayan ittifakı üzerine kurulmuştur. Alttan alta işlenen erkek egemen toplumun kadını köleleştirdiği savı anında bir skandal yaratmıştır. 1903'te Baudelaire'in kitaba dair notları yayımlanınca kitap buzun yakabildiği gibi yakmaya başladı. Gerçeküstücüler Laclos'un şahsında yeni bir Sade bulduklarını düşündüler; Malraux'ya göre ise Tehlikeli İlişkiler iradenin erotikleştirilmesiydi.
