Bu eseri 1849'da Shirley ve 1853'de Villette izledi. Yazdığı ilk roman olan Profesör ise yazarın ölümünden iki yıl sonra 1857 yılında eşinin onayı ile basıldı.Gamze Varım: İ.Ü. Edebiyat Fakültesi İngiliz Dili ve Edebiyatı Bölümü'nü bitirdi. Cumhuriyet gazetesinin kültür servisinde, Milliyet ve Radikal gazetelerinin dış haberler servislerinde çalıştı. 2000 yılından bu yana editörlük ve çevirmenlik yapıyor. Metis Çeviri, Kitap-lık ve Adam Öykü dergilerinde yazıları ve çevirileri yayımlandı. Pek çok roman, inceleme ve çocuk kitabı çevirdi ve yayıma hazırladı.
